Animal-Assisted Therapy and Service Dog Grants Currently Available

Here are this week’s highlighted foundations and grants. This week’s focus? Animal-assisted therapy and service dogs!

1) Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation 
  • The Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that provide assistance animals to the disabled. Additionally, the Foundation provides funding for nature conservation and the preservation of wildlife. 
  • The handicap assistance animals program places the highest priority on dogs assisting the blind. Animals trained to perform specific tasks for those with physical impairments are then given consideration. Unfortunately, the Foundation does not fund therapy, autism, PTSD, facility, or emotional support animals at this time
  • To apply, eligible nonprofit organizations must submit a completed online application to [email protected]. After submitting your application, you will receive an initial acknowledgement of receipt followed by a decision from the trustees, usually within 90 to 120 days.
  • Grants range from $3,000 - $150,000. 
  • Deadline: August 1st (annually) 
2) Patterson Foundation 
  • The Patterson Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that enhance the quality of life and create social and economic value in communities. The Foundation’s current focus areas include animal health and oral health. 
  • Animal health funds are awarded to organizations that provide assistance dogs to veterans and individuals with disabilities. This includes grants for startup costs or one-time expenses to help a program expand capacity. 
  • To apply, eligible nonprofit organizations will first be required to submit a letter of inquiry. Once accepted and approved, the organization will be invited to complete an online application form. The Foundation's staff will likely contact applicants with follow-up questions after the initial review and completion of an application. 
  • Grants range from $2,000 to $60,000. 
  • Deadline: None, but accepted applications are reviewed quarterly in March, June, September, and December. 
3) PetSmart Charities
  • The mission of PetSmart Charities is to improve the quality of life for all companion animals through programs that save the lives of homeless pets and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. The organization provides support in both the United States and Canada. 
  • The focus of this grant program (one of many provided by PetsSmart Charities) is animal-assisted therapy programs at children's hospitals or hospitals with a children’s component. 
  • To apply, eligible applicants - including nonprofit organizations, registered charities, government agencies, educational institutions, and tribal authorities -  are required to contact the Regional Relationship Manager for their region. (These managers are showcased on a map found at the PetSmart Charities website.)
  • Selected applicants will receive an invitation.  Only those who receive an invitation to apply may complete an online application.
  • There is no listed amount for grants awarded. However, last year annual giving was approximately $45,000,000. 
  • Deadline: July 10th thru July 31st, 2019
4) Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation 
  • The Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation seeks to support nonprofit organizations across the United States in an area of special interest. They offer help with general operations and project support. 
  • The Foundation's areas of interest include:
    • animal welfare and animal-assisted therapy
    • arts and culture, including museums
    • Catholic organizations
    • children and youth
    • education
    • health
    • social services
  • To apply, eligible nonprofit organizations are required to submit a written request that includes a description of the organization, a full description of the project, and the amount of their request to:

  • Applicants should also include a copy of their current year's organizational budget, a project budget, and an IRS letter confirming tax-exempt status.

  • Grants awarded average from $5,000 - $25,000 but are sometimes larger.
