Health and Physical Education Grants Currently Available

Here are this week’s highlighted foundations and grants. This week’s focus? Health and physical education for youth!

1) The Foundation for Global Sports Development
  • The Foundation for Global Sports Development (GSD) aids the sports community by delivering and supporting initiatives that promote fair play, education, and the physical and developmental benefits of sports for youth around the world.
  • The Foundation gives special attention to groups and communities that are most in need or most underserved by current programs.  
  • The Foundation provides grants to:
    • nonprofit organizations throughout the United States that support a combination of educational enrichment and youth sports programs or activities. 
    • international organizations that fight against social injustice for the most vulnerable youth.
  • They also implement sports and educational development programs that create long-lasting and sustainable change for youth around the world.
  • Organizations are eligible for support if they provide structured sports activities for elementary school to high school-aged children and have an educational component to their program. Additionally, an organization must:
    • offer sports activities to program participants at no charge.
    • be certified as tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code.
    • possess a written policy addressing its commitment to keep children safe from sexual abuse by preventing, recognizing, and responding to situations both on and off the playing field that in any way compromises their safety.
    • possess an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Report. 
  • If you believe your organization is eligible, submit an eligibility form through GSD’s website. Once GSD has determined that your organization is eligible to receive a grant, you will be invited to submit a grant application.
  • The amount of funding awarded is unspecified, but the Foundation's annual giving was last recorded as $1,899,000.

2) Good Sports Equipment Grants 
  • The mission of Good Sports is to help disadvantaged youth in the US lay the foundation for healthy, active lifestyles.
  • The Foundation achieves this goal by providing athletic equipment, footwear, and apparel through grants. 
  • Equipment grants are provided to community organizations and schools that operate an organized sport, recreational activity, or fitness program that offers consistent and structured opportunity for play to large groups of children. 
  • Additional requirement for applying schools: more than half of the student body must be eligible for free/reduced lunch.
  • Please note: Support is not provided for short-term events or to individual athletes.
  • Eligible organizations will fill out an online application and must:
    • serve youth between the ages of 3 and 18 years old in an economically disadvantaged area.
    • charge a participation fee of $299 or below. 
    • be located in the United States. 
  • Approved organizations will have access to equipment, apparel, and footwear inventory for a two-year period. During that time, an organization will be able to use up to six total donation requests, with a maximum of three donation requests per year.

3) Road Runners Club of America: Kids Run the Nation Fund
  • The Road Runners Club of America (RCCA) is dedicated to promoting the sport of running through the development and growth of running clubs and running events throughout the country. 
  • Their initiative, Kids Run the Nation Fund, supports nonprofit organizations and schools throughout the United States that are interested in implementing or currently have a youth running program. 
  • Eligible organizations will be an official 501(c)(3), school, parent booster club, PTA, or a similar entity.
  • A completed online application will be necessary to apply for a grant. Additionally, before applying, make sure that:
    • your running program has the goal of encouraging kids to run regularly, more than once each week for multiple weeks, as opposed to participating in a single event. 
    • your program is gender-inclusive, encouraging and welcoming participation by both boys and girls. 
    • your program is focused on participation. 
    • your running program maintains policies and procedures that ensure the safety of the participants and outline expectations of program leaders. Criminal background checks on all adult program staff and volunteers is also required. 
  • Awarded grants range from $500 to $1000. 
  • Deadline: August 1st, 2019
4) Saucony Run for Good Foundation
  • The mission of the Saucony Run For Good Foundation is to improve the lives of children by helping to prevent and reduce childhood obesity. 
  • The Foundation provides funding to nonprofit community organizations that promote running and healthy lifestyle programs for youth 18 years of age and younger.
  • Grant recipients are determined by how the organization:
    • utilizes running participation for health and well-being in children.
    • serves youth populations not traditionally exposed to running programs.
    • demonstrates support and inspiration in creating a program that exemplifies the Foundation's mission of improving the lives of children through running.
  • Eligible organizations will need to fill out an online application and are required to:
    • provide proof of tax-exempt status. 
    • write a proposal that demonstrates how your organization will conduct programs that increase participation in running to positively impact the lives of your participants. 
  • Awarded grants will be up to $10,000. 
  • Deadline: June 15th and December 15th (annually)
