How Grant Funding Makes Projects Possible

There comes a time for every public or private entity – be it a state or local government, a nonprofit organization, or even just an enterprising individual – when they require extra funding in order to get a worthwhile project off the ground. Nothing good in life is ever free, as the old saying goes, and you have to spend money to make money. Sadly, most people have been in situations where they simply didn’t have any money to spend. (Just think of all the times you’ve heard someone tell you what they would do if only they could afford it.) As a result, many dreams and ideas have gone unrealized and countless people have gone without assistance they might desperately have needed.
Fortunately, there are a number of groups and individuals who can often help to change this state of affairs. Grant providers and grant writers work year-round to raise funds and make them available to those in need. The work they do enriches communities, supports...

Pass-Through and State Grants: Understanding the Difference

Even the federal government needs help from state governments to funnel grant money into public programs and projects. This is where pass-through grants come in. But how does this differ from state grants for similar good works?

But why can’t the federal government simply award the grant itself? Why have a pass-through entity to deliver and monitor...

The Determination Letter: Holy Grail for Nonprofits

You’ve done it. Your nonprofit is up and running, working to fulfill its mission to the best of its abilities using every available resource. But what if you haven’t yet received a determination letter? Your nonprofit might not be getting all of the benefits it should be.

What is a determination letter? And why is it so important?
A determination letter is awarded to a nonprofit organization when the IRS has approved its application for federal tax exemption under Section 501(c)(3). This means any donations or grants that are received, or any income earned from group sponsored activities, will not incur tax. This exemption allows your organization to operate more efficiently and devote more funds to your mission.

Several additional perks to consider once your determination letter has been received include the following:
    • Donors may claim their contributions on their annual tax returns.
    • Your organization will receive discounts...

3 Steps to Finding Grants for Your Organization

The time has come — you’ve determined your organization is ready and prepared to start applying for grants. How do you find grants for your organization?
